Welcome to BARS

The British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) was set up in 1989 by academics to promote the study of the cultural history of the Romantic period. Since then, BARS has organised eight International conferences at various locations in the UK, has published the BARS Bulletin and Review twice-yearly, and currently has more than 350 members.

BARS Postgraduates

Welcome to the BARS Postgraduate page. Here you can find details of how to contact your representative, Daniel Cook. If you have any questions, or there are issues you would like to raise, please get in touch via the addresses below. We aim to be an approachable point of contact for BARS postgraduates. Our role is to provide a voice for postgraduate members at the BARS committee meetings and to ensure that their interests are reflected in any decisions made by the executive. During our two years' tenure, we will also contribute the postgraduate column to the BARS newsletter and organise a one-day conference for postgraduates.

As a postgraduate, joining BARS means becoming part of a community of fellow researchers. Apart from joining the largest UK body of Romanticists, the benefits of BARS membership for postgraduates include:

  • A twice-yearly newsletter, with news and reviews of conferences and publications
  • Regular e-mails with details of publications, conferences, websites, and jobs
  • Use of the BARS website resources, including links and back issues of the newsletter
  • A bi-annual postgraduate day conference, providing a relaxed forum in which to present and hear research and to socialise with your peers
  • BARS postgraduate bursaries
