BARS Postgraduates - Postgraduate Conference

This year's postgraduate conference aims to bring together a range of literary, aesthetic, philosophical, political, and social discourses in Europe during the Romantic Era. 300-word abstracts for 20-minute papers are welcomed on all aspects of writing in and about Europe during the Romantic Era, and on related areas antecedent and subsequent to the period. Deadline for receipt of abstracts: 30th March 2001.
Possible topics might include:
Travel writing: gendered experiences of travel; observation, spectacle; The Grand Tour; exile; expatriate society and 'the English abroad'; England as a traveller's destination
National Identity and Cultural Memory - the emergence of nationalism; literature, landscape and location; representations of the past; antiquity and modernity in Romantic consciousness
Intellectual Relations and Traditions -aesthetics and Romantic representation; scientific and empirical discourses; the influence of French Enlightenment; Anglo-European relations; historiography of nations
Europe / Other cross-cultural discourses between Europe and the East, the Americas or the South; representations of European revolutions and political crises; imperialism
The conference will include a special panel session on archive research and textual editing, chaired by Claire Lamont, with Pamela Clemit, Emma Clery, Simon Kövesi and Francesco Rognoni.
