Welcome to BARS

The British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) was set up in 1989 by academics to promote the study of the cultural history of the Romantic period. Since then, BARS has organised eight International conferences at various locations in the UK, has published the BARS Bulletin and Review twice-yearly, and currently has more than 350 members.

BARS Postgraduate Conferences

  • The Early Careers and Postgraduate Conference for The British Association for Romantic Studies: Romantic Connections: Networks of Influence, c.1760-1835, Friday 1st June 2012, Newcastle University. Please click the link for more details. Deadline for abstracts: 30th January 2012. We aim to notify successful speakers by the beginning of March 2012.
  • CFP: Student Byron Conference, to be held May 2011: The Edge Hill Romantic Research Forum, in collaboration with The Byron Centre at the University of Manchester, are pleased to announce a new Student Byron Conference for second and third year undergraduates, MA students and first year PhD students. The conference is to be held at Edge Hill University on Wednesday, 25thMay, 2011. The conference will be opened, and the panels chaired, by Byron/Romantic scholars but the papers will be given by the students. This is an excellent opportunity for those students who might be interested in postgraduate work, to try out and develop their conference skills. They will also have the opportunity to hear keynote speakers who are international experts in this field.
