Welcome to BARS

The British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) was set up in 1989 by academics to promote the study of the cultural history of the Romantic period. Since then, BARS has organised eight International conferences at various locations in the UK, has published the BARS Bulletin and Review twice-yearly, and currently has more than 350 members.

Sheila Birkenhead Bursary Award Scheme

Keats-Shelley Memorial Association ( see also KSMA Awards)

 The Association operates a bursary scheme for graduate students intending to present an academic paper at any Conference in the field of Romantic studies in the United Kingdom between January and October each year.

Bursaries , established in 1998 in memory of Sheila Birkenhead (former KSMA Chairman and author of books on Keats ( Against Oblivion, Illustrious Friends ) cover all, or in most cases, part of the full cost of attending such conferences. Candidates must be postgraduates studying full-time for a second degree in English Literature at any UK University, and should be full-time residents in the UK .

Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications should include a CV (including the names of two referees), an abstract of the paper to be read, details of the conference, and proof of its acceptance by the conference organisers, with full conference details, including costs. There is no application form.

Applications may be submitted at any time, but the closing date for applications each year is 1st June. No applications are considered after that date.
