George III had lost his life and the new king George IV was<br \/>\nrapidly losing what little shreds remained of his dignity, lost what little shreds remained of his dignity, pursuing<br \/>\nhis errant wife with hypocritical vengeance during the so-called Queen Caroline Affair. The government had lost<br \/>\nthe trust of the people, and many politicians would have lost their lives had the Cato Street Conspiracy<br \/>\nsucceeded. Meanwhile Byron, now in the fourth year of his self-imposed exile, was rapidly losing his hair, teeth,<br \/>\nfamous good looks, and \u2013 some might argue \u2013 his own dignity. It is against this backdrop that he became<br \/>\ninterested in Italian politics, or rather the loss of political authority and national autonomy.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>To mark the year of 1820, we welcome papers considering the theme of Byron and loss. Topics could include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grief, familial loss and suicide<\/li>\n<li>Melancholy, weltschmerz, Romantic melancholia<\/li>\n<li>Material and aesthetic losses<\/li>\n<li>Appetite and diet<\/li>\n<li>Loss of status, land, and national autonomy<\/li>\n<li>Loss of love, lovers, and spouses<\/li>\n<li>Religious convictions and anxieties<\/li>\n<li>Idealism and political convictions<\/li>\n<li>Anxieties about poetic reputation and legacy<\/li>\n<li>Writer\u2019s block and poetic inspiration<\/li>\n<li>Financial losses, economic instability and usury<\/li>\n<li>Ruins and degeneration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Submissions by 1st February 2020.
