{"id":3656,"date":"2021-05-06T07:32:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T07:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bars.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=3656"},"modified":"2021-05-06T07:32:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T07:32:44","slug":"cfp-william-cowper-art-and-afterlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bars.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=3656","title":{"rendered":"CFP: William Cowper, Art and Afterlife"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Olney, Buckinghamshire<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>3\u20134 September 2021<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call for papers from postgraduate students and early-career researchers for a two-day seminar on<br>William Cowper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cowper lived in and around Olney from 1768 to 1795, and it was here that he wrote Olney<br>Hymns (1779) with John Newton, Poems (1782), The Task (1785), and translated Homer. The<br>seminar will be centred on Cowper\u2019s career in verse (hymns, poems, and translations), with a<br>particular focus on the formal and stylistic elements of this writing. Among a range of potential<br>subjects, papers may wish to address Cowper\u2019s place in the satirical tradition, the potential for<br>ecocritical and environmental approaches to poems such as \u2018Yardley Oak\u2019 and \u2018The Cast-away\u2019,<br>or Cowper\u2019s critical heritage from Wordsworth and Coleridge to Empson and Davie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposals should be in the form of 150-word abstracts for fifteen- to twenty-minute papers.<br>Papers will be delivered in a sedentary roundtable format, with fifteen minutes for questions and<br>conversation.
