We invite proposals for short papers on this theme to join our panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the past decade, Metal Studies has emerged from \u2018a history of academic neglect or conflict over the value or legitimacy of metal music and its culture(s)\u2019 into the global spotlight.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Metal Studies is beginning to intermix with Romantic Studies; recently, James Rovira\u2019s inclusion of metal as a \u2018Dark Romanticism\u2019 in the second volume of the <em>Rock and Romanticism<\/em> series indicates the potential for future work in this area.<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> Romanticism weighs heavily upon metal, from Iron Maiden\u2019s \u2018Rime of the Ancient Mariner\u2019 to Metallica\u2019s <em>Frankenstein<\/em>-inspired \u2018Some Kind of Monster\u2019. But Romanticism\u2019s influence upon metal goes beyond lyrical allusions. Ross Wilson, in reflecting upon Kantian aesthetics and heavy metal\u2019s indebtedness to Romantic negotiations of genre, observes that \u2018Where Romanticism is often held to have inaugurated an epoch of freer artistic creation, dispensing with observance of established conventions of specific genres as a condition of artistic excellence, heavy metal is amazingly generically differentiated\u2019.<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> This panel seeks to bring together established and early career scholars to consider how Metal Studies can encourage innovation and interdisciplinary exploration within the study of Romanticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please send 150-word proposals for 10-minute papers to<\/strong> <strong>Amanda Blake Davis (<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:amanda.davis@sheffield.ac.uk\"><strong>amanda.davis@sheffield.ac.uk<\/strong><\/a><strong>) and Matthew Sangster (<\/strong><a href=\"mailto:matthew.sangster@glasgow.ac.uk\"><strong>matthew.sangster@glasgow.ac.uk<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong> <strong>by Sunday 31<sup>st<\/sup> October<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> <em>Global Metal Music and Culture: Current Directions in Metal Studies<\/em>, ed. by Andy R.
