{"id":4580,"date":"2023-04-06T17:49:02","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T17:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bars.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=4580"},"modified":"2023-04-06T17:49:02","modified_gmt":"2023-04-06T17:49:02","slug":"call-for-papers-inventing-the-human","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bars.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=4580","title":{"rendered":"Call for Papers: Inventing the Human"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Inventing the Human: <em>Conference, conversations, provocations, roundtables, and exhibition\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>29<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;November to 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;December 2023&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Melbourne (f2f and virtual)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This interdisciplinary and hybrid conference sets out to place the (liberal-humanist) subject dispatched by posthumanism inside\u00a0the\u00a0much\u00a0larger\u00a0field\u00a0of\u00a0Enlightenment\/Romantic\u00a0thought\u00a0on\u00a0this topic\u2014a\u00a0field\u00a0that,\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0one\u00a0hand,\u00a0is\u00a0no\u00a0longer\u00a0imagined\u00a0as\u00a0beginning\u00a0and\u00a0ending\u00a0in\u00a0Europe\u00a0and,\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0other\u00a0hand,\u00a0is\u00a0always already\u00a0in\u00a0dialogue\u00a0or\u00a0conflict\u00a0with\u00a0non-European\u00a0traditions,\u00a0understandings,\u00a0and\u00a0discourses\u00a0of\u00a0the human.\u00a0We\u00a0take\u00a0as\u00a0our\u00a0key\u00a0themes\u00a0the\u00a0pasts,\u00a0futures,\u00a0and\u00a0varieties\u00a0of\u00a0reason,\u00a0imagination,\u00a0liberty,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0body\u2014 terms\u00a0crucial\u00a0to\u00a0modern\u00a0understandings\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0human.\u00a0But\u00a0we\u00a0do\u00a0this\u00a0in\u00a0order\u00a0to\u00a0ask,\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0world\u00a0where\u00a0Europe\u00a0is\u00a0merely\u00a0one\u00a0centre\u00a0among\u00a0many,\u00a0what\u00a0of\u00a0this\u00a0legacy\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0dispatched?\u00a0What can be revised or extended by other traditions? What in the world\u2019s multiple humanities might\u00a0open new possibilities for the future?
