\u201cRomantic Connections\u201d (University of Tokyo,<\/span> June 13-15, 2014).<\/span> Christoph Bode (LMU Munich)<\/span> Over the last two decades, there has been sustained scholarly interest <\/span>in the connections between European Romanticism and the peoples<\/span>, and literatures of the rest of the world. In addition to <\/span>discussing representations of the \u201cEast\u201d by Romantic authors, there <\/span>has been a growing trend towards viewing Romanticism itself in a <\/span>global context, as a movement shaped by wider eighteenth- and early <\/span>nineteenth-century forces of trade, migration, material circulation, <\/span>intellectual exchange, slavery, and colonialism.<\/span><\/p>\n While our approach will be informed by the legacy of Saidian <\/span>\u201cOrientalism,\u201d we are particularly interested in models of <\/span>intercultural connection which refine or challenge totalizing models <\/span>of domination and subordination.
