Conference and Seminar Support
- The attractiveness of the proposed activity and its theme(s), the balance of breadth and focus the plans offer, and the extent to which they encourage interdisciplinary approaches, and international and interdisciplinary participation.
- The quality and quantity of the benefits and opportunities provided to BARS members, scholars, graduate students, and other people with an interest in Romanticism and/or the Romantic period.
- The contribution the event promises to make to the development of the field of Romantic Studies.
- Evidence of careful preparation and planning, availability of an appropriate venue, commitment of the host department/institution, etc.
- A clear sense of the intended expenditure of the grant, value for money from this expenditure, and strategic alignment with the interests of BARS.
- Previous grants to institutions and/or individuals. While a recent successful application from an institution or individual does not preclude the award of another grant, BARS generally aims to distribute grants across different institutions and countries.
Based on the fit with these criteria, BARS may award a lower sum than that requested. We are also keen to support initiatives that help to advance the career prospects of postgraduates and early-career scholars, and which have a public engagement aspect. Who is eligible?
The applicant must be a member of BARS; if this is not the case, membership is available via the BARS website.
How do I apply?
Please send a completed BARS Conference and Seminar Support Application form to the BARS Treasurer, Professor Mary Fairclough: bars.treasurer@gmail.com. The form can be downloaded using the button below.
When is the closing date?
There are two annual deadlines for this scheme, on 1 November and 1 April each year.
What are the conditions?
We require that you
- Acknowledge BARS's support on all promotional material (e.g. website and programme), including the BARS logo which you can download at the bottom of this page. The image below is large so as to be suitable for print production, but can easily be rescaled in common software such as Word and Paint.
- Provide a brief report for the BARS Blog within six weeks of the conclusion of the activity BARS has funded.
How will I know whether I have been successful?
Applications will be assessed by a sub-committee of the BARS Executive Committee, and outcomes will be communicated to applicants within two weeks of the application deadline.
