Welcome to BARS

The British Association for Romantic Studies (BARS) was set up in 1989 by academics to promote the study of the cultural history of the Romantic period. Since then, BARS has organised biennial International Conferences at various locations across the UK, has published the BARS Bulletin and Review twice-yearly, and currently has more than 400 members.

How To Join

BARS memberships run from 1st January to 31st December each year. Subscriptions are due on January 1st, regardless of the month of joining BARS. The annual subscription costs £25 (waged) or £10 (unwaged and/or postgraduate).

Members will be subscribed to the BARS Electronic Mailbase, will be eligible for BARS funding in the form of grants and bursaries and can attend BARS International Conferences and EC&PG events. BARS dues support the open-access publication of The BARS Review and BARS' continuing work connecting Romanticists in Britain, Europe, the United States, Australasia and the wider world.
